Heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death and disability for people in the U.S. Overweight people are more likely to have high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, than people who are not overweight. Very high blood levels of cholesterol can also lead to heart disease and often are linked to being overweight. Being overweight also contributes to angina (chest pain caused by decreased oxygen to the heart) and sudden death from heart disease or stroke without any signs or symptoms.
More than one-third of people age 65 and older in the United States are obese, according to the study authors. Obesity worsens the typical age-related decline in physical functioning and causes frailty, while weight loss can lead to harmful declines in muscle mass and bone density.
Future trials need to address specific exercise training modalities, calcium, Vitamin D and protein supplementation, and/or prescribing anti-resorptive therapy (e.g. in patients with low BMD to start with) during active weight loss. Trials specifically designed to investigate the complex interplay between exercise, caloric restriction, weight loss, diet composition, hormones, growth factors, and inflammatory markers are also needed. Finally, trials need to have adequate sample size with appropriate controls, and long follow-up periods are needed to determine how best to achieve sustained lifestyle change associated with optimal health outcomes in frail, obese older adults. With the 65+ age group representing the fastest growing segment of the population, and with a high prevalence of obesity, these studies should become a priority for public health research.

Since BMI is a measure calculated from height and weight, a change in height will change BMI as well. In fact, if a senior weighs the same, and his or her height is now less, then the BMI will be falsely higher. This could classify the senior as “overweight”, while in reality, that is not the case. Scientists and physicians still debate about a better measure for weight classification, but for now, BMI is the accepted one and physicians need to use it, while understanding its limitations.

Through its growing sway over health-conscious consumers and policy makers, the wholesome-food movement is impeding the progress of the one segment of the food world that is actually positioned to take effective, near-term steps to reverse the obesity trend: the processed-food industry. Popular food producers, fast-food chains among them, are already applying various tricks and technologies to create less caloric and more satiating versions of their junky fare that nonetheless retain much of the appeal of the originals, and could be induced to go much further. Psychological factors. For some people, emotions influence eating habits. Many people eat excessively in response to emotions such as boredom, sadness, stress, or anger. While most overweight people have no more psychological disturbances than normal weight people, about 30% of the people who seek treatment for serious weight problems have difficulties with binge eating.
Diagnosis of obesity is made by observation and by comparing the patient’s weight to ideal weight charts. Many doctors and obesity researchers refer to the body mass index (BMI), which uses a height-weight relationship to calculate an individual’s ideal weight and personal risk of developing obesity-related health problems. Physicians may also obtain direct measurements of an individual’s body fat content by using calipers to measure skin-fold thickness at the back of the upper arm and other sites. The most accurate means of measuring body fat content involves immersing a person in water and measuring relative displacement; however, this method is very impractical and is usually only used in scientific studies requiring very specific assessments. Women whose body fat exceeds 30% and men whose body fat exceeds 25% are generally considered obese.

Though it’s difficult to say why some people develop cancer while others don’t, research shows that certain risk factors increase a person’s odds of developing cancer. Being overweight or obese isn’t just a cosmetic issue. Both conditions put your health at risk and can contribute a number of diseases, including diabetes and cancer. That risk only increases in individuals who have a family history of health problems, have a sedentary lifestyle, smoke, or have an unhealthy diet.
About 72 percent of Sacramento-area baby boomers were overweight or obese in 2012, compared to 61 percent among the same age group in 2003, the UCLA data show. During that same period, the percentage of younger adults, ages 18 to 47, in the region who were overweight or obese rose just 2 percent, to just more than half the people in that age group.

The third paper, Shah et al. (2011), focused on bone loss measuring C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX) as a marker of bone resorption, and osteocalcin and N-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen as a markers of bone formation. Bone-active hormones, serum estradiol, IGF-1, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and serum PTH concentration were also obtained. Serum C-terminal telopeptide (CTX) and osteocalcin increased in the diet group, with bone resorption increasing more than bone formation. Both of these markers decreased in the exercise and control groups. Osteocalcin did not change with the combination of diet and exercise. Serum leptin and estradiol concentrations decreased more markedly in diet plus exercise than in diet alone (−38% and −13%, respectively). It was suggested that the decrease in leptin with weight loss could stimulate the receptor activator of NF-κB ligand and the receptor activator of NF-κB pathway leading to increased bone resorption and bone loss (Burguera 2001; Thomas 2002). There was no decrease in IGF-1 with weight loss and this was attributed to adequate protein intake during weight loss. Change in mechanical stress was cited as the mechanism behind BMD loss in the hip, but not in the spine or whole body. The most important finding was that in these obese older adults supplemented with calcium and vitamin D, exercise training added to weight loss offset increased bone turnover and loss of BMD. This was supported by changes in lean body mass, 1RM strength and osteocalcin, the only variables that remained in the final regression model predicting the changes in hip BMD, suggesting that exercise countered the unloading effect of weight loss on BMD.

With the arrival of televisions, computers, video games, remote controls, washing machines, dish washers and other modern convenience devices, people are commonly are leading a much more sedentary lifestyle compared to their parents and grandparents.
And a study in a recent issue of the journal Demography–synthesizing the results of five national surveys—found increasing disability among those ages 55 to 64 between 2000 and 2008 (a group that included the oldest baby boomers).3 By contrast, disability levels continued to decline among the oldest Americans (ages 85 and older) and held steady among the elderly ages 65 to 84 during the same period, reported Vicki Freedman, a University of Michigan demographer and lead author.

The high rates of obesity and depression, and their individual links with cardiovascular disease, have prompted many investigators to explore the relationship between weight and mood. An analysis of 17 cross-sectional studies found that people who were obese were more likely to have depression than people with healthy weights. (17) Since the studies included in the analysis assessed weight and mood only at one point in time, the investigators could not say whether obesity increases the risk of depression or depression increases the risk of obesity. New evidence confirms that the relationship between obesity and depression may be a two-way street: A meta-analysis of 15 long-term studies that followed 58,000 participants for up to 28 years found that people who were obese at the start of the study had a 55 percent higher risk of developing depression by the end of the follow-up period, and people who had depression at the start of the study had a 58 percent higher risk of becoming obese. “It used to be thought that older patients don’t respond to treatment for obesity as well as younger patients,” Kahan says. “People assume that they couldn’t exercise as much or for whatever reason they couldn’t stick to diets as well. But we’ve disproven that.”

Obesity has also been clearly linked to a lesser overall quality of life, which is of particular concern to the aging adult. Seniors can already be plagued by multiple conditions that decrease their quality of life, and obesity only adds another burden.

Researchers are also tinkering with food ingredients to boost satiety. Cargill has developed a starch derived from tapioca that gives dishes a refined-carb taste and mouthfeel, but acts more like fiber in the body—a feature that could keep the appetite from spiking later. “People usually think that processing leads to foods that digest too quickly, but we’ve been able to use processing to slow the digestion rate,” says Bruce McGoogan, who heads R&D for Cargill’s North American food-ingredient business. The company has also developed ways to reduce fat in beef patties, and to make baked goods using half the usual sugar and oil, all without heavily compromising taste and texture.

According to the National Institute of Health, the percentage of those seniors entering nursing homes who are moderate and severely obese — with a body mass index of 35 or greater — has risen sharply, to nearly 25% in 2010 from 14.7% in 2000, according to a recent study, and many signs suggest the upward trend is continuing.

The BMI does not tke count for mass of muscle versus mass of fat. A BMI both below and above the so-called normal values can be healthy if there is little fat, but well developed muscle mass. And a person with a BMI less that 18.5 can be too fat if the muscle mass is very scant, but much fat.

A total of 2,309 prospective articles were initially identified. After removing duplicates and irrelevant studies, 90 articles were retained. Of these 90 articles, 83 were excluded for not meeting the inclusion criteria outlined previously. Three articles were manually added. The selection of articles was agreed upon by two authors (DLW and DTV). The final analysis yielded a total of ten articles meeting all established criteria (Figure 1). These articles are listed in Table 1. They are not ordered chronologically, but instead grouped by similarities between study design and intervention, for ease of discussion. Only one small pilot study was found under the category feasibility/maintenance of long-term weight loss in older adults that satisfied our study selection criteria. This study is not included in Table 1, but is discussed under the subheading 3.2 Feasibility and Long-term Maintenance of Weight Loss, in the Discussion the Systematic Review section.

Structure House offered me the opportunity to leave my chaotic world of eating and go to a safe place to build new habits that would last a lifetime. BMI provides the most useful population-level measure of overweight and obesity as it is the same for both sexes and for all ages of adults. However, it should be considered a rough guide because it may not correspond to the same degree of fatness in different individuals.

A critically ill person that has to stay in the Intensive Care Unit would burn muscle during the disease process much more than expected regardless of the degree of obesity. This is a very interesting study area for many scientists interested in nutrition. In addition, even if not very severe, any illness resulting in unplanned weight-loss will decrease muscle mass. Therefore, it is important to pay close attention to rehabilitation and proper nutrition during and after an illness, especially in the elderly that already have lesser muscle reserves.

In an article published in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association), the authors said they found that regions in the brain that regulate appetite became active when people consumed glucose, but remained inactive when they ingested fructose. When those regions become active, they release hormones that produce feelings of satiety (fullness) – in other words, the hormones tell you to stop eating.

When the BMI is above 25, a person is considered overweight. When it’s above 30, the person is obese. Although BMI is useful for men and women, it does have limitations. For example, BMI may overestimate body fat in individuals who have a highly muscular build such as athletes and underestimate it in people who have lost muscle (for example, those who are recovering from surgery or cancer).

Four trials (10 publications) examined pharmacologic treatment options for unexplained weight loss (Table 2).14–16,21–27 All four trials were small and only one was a blinded randomized control trial.23–27 The most commonly studied medication was megestrol acetate. One study also looked at the use of dronabinol for unexplained weight loss.

Medical treatment of obesity focuses on lifestyle changes such as eating less and increasing activity level. There are medications that can promote weight loss, although they work only in conjunction with eating less and exercising more.

Though Wilhelm’s ordeal with her father was painful and confusing, she has important advice for others. “People just totally rely on what the doctor says,” she says, wishing her father had a more attentive and proactive geriatrician. “We are not really a society that challenges a doctor’s advice; we seem to just be very accepting of what the doctor says.”

Although the prevalence of obesity in persons who are over 80 years of age  is about one-half that of older adults between the ages of 50 and 59, the fact is that more than 15% of the older American population is obese (Villareal et al., 2005). Moreover, as the aging population increases in number, so too will the number of chronic illnesses, which often accompany aging, increase in our society (Flood & Newman, 2007). Chronic conditions, such as arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, are among some of the most common, debilitating, and costly chronic conditions in older adults. These conditions are frequently accentuated by obesity (Federal Interagency Forum on Aging, 2006).

Insulin resistance. Insulin is necessary for the transport of blood glucose (sugar) into the cells of muscle and fat (which is then used for energy). By transporting glucose into cells, insulin keeps the blood glucose levels in the normal range. Insulin resistance (IR) is the condition whereby the effectiveness of insulin in transporting glucose (sugar) into cells is diminished. Fat cells are more insulin resistant than muscle cells; therefore, one important cause of insulin resistance is obesity. The pancreas initially responds to insulin resistance by producing more insulin. As long as the pancreas can produce enough insulin to overcome this resistance, blood glucose levels remain normal. This insulin resistance state (characterized by normal blood glucose levels and high insulin levels) can last for years. Once the pancreas can no longer keep up with producing high levels of insulin, blood glucose levels begin to rise, resulting in type 2 diabetes, thus insulin resistance is a pre-diabetes condition.

Mirtazapine (Remeron), a serotonin antagonist used to treat depression, has gained interest as a possible treatment for unintentional weight loss in older patients because 12% of patients who take this drug for depression report weight gain.36 Although no literature exists to support its use for unintentional weight loss, mirtazapine may be an option for older patients with depression who also have unintentional weight loss. Because dizziness and orthostatic hypotension are possible adverse effects of mirtazapine, caution is warranted in patients at risk of falls.36,37
Consuming more energy from foods and beverages than the body uses for healthy functioning, growth, and physical activity can lead to extra weight gain over time.4   The Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage children and adolescents to maintain calorie balance to support normal growth and development without promoting excess weight gain.5 Energy imbalance is a key factor behind the high rates of obesity seen in the United States and globally.6,7

Compared to younger populations, elderly people tend to be on more medications. It’s critical that you talk to your doctor or health care professional before beginning a new diet regimen. There are a multitude of food and drug interactions that can be detrimental to your health, especially for thinners or cholesterol and blood pressure medications. Your physician knows your prescription history and can forewarn you on which foods to avoid.
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat that is difficult to get rid of with diet and exercise. Liposuction does not prevent weight regain. Liposuction has a good safety record; risks of the procedure include infection and skin discoloration.
Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health.[19] It is defined by body mass index (BMI) and further evaluated in terms of fat distribution via the waist–hip ratio and total cardiovascular risk factors.[20][21] BMI is closely related to both percentage body fat and total body fat.[22] In children, a healthy weight varies with age and sex. Obesity in children and adolescents is defined not as an absolute number but in relation to a historical normal group, such that obesity is a BMI greater than the 95th percentile.[23] The reference data on which these percentiles were based date from 1963 to 1994, and thus have not been affected by the recent increases in weight.[24] BMI is defined as the subject’s weight divided by the square of their height and is calculated as follows.
Significant regulation of junk food may not go far, but we have other tools at our disposal to prod Big Food to intensify and speed up its efforts to cut fat and problem carbs in its offerings, particularly if we’re smart about it. Lenard Lesser points out that government and advocacy groups could start singling out particular restaurants and food products for praise or shaming—a more official version of “eat this, not that”—rather than sticking to a steady drumbeat of “processed food must go away.” Academia could do a much better job of producing and highlighting solid research into less obesogenic, high-mass-appeal foods, and could curtail its evidence-light anti-food-processing bias, so that the next generation of social and policy entrepreneurs might work to narrow the gap between the poor obese and the well-resourced healthy instead of inadvertently widening it. We can keep pushing our health-care system to provide more incentives and support to the obese for losing weight by making small, painless, but helpful changes in their behavior, such as switching from Whoppers to turkey burgers, from Egg McMuffins to Egg White Delights, or from blueberry crisp to fruit-and-yogurt parfaits.

Obesity clearly exacerbates the age-related decline in physical function and causes frailty in older individuals. Frailty in older obese individuals may be related to the insulin resistance and inflammation that often accompany obesity (36). This is reflected by self-reported impairment in activities of daily living in the older obese individual, limitations in mobility and decreased physical performance (as detailed in the former segment), increased risk for functional decline, and a higher rate of nursing home admissions (35,37–39). Of particular significance in establishing a cause-and-effect relationship between obesity and frailty is the recent report that weight loss and exercise can ameliorate frailty in older obese adults (40).
Gaining weight as an adult increases the risk for several cancers, if the weight gain doesn’t result in overweight or obesity. It isn’t known exactly how being overweight increases cancer risk. Fat cells may release hormones that affect cell growth, leading to cancer. Also, eating or physical activity habits that may lead to being overweight may also contribute to cancer risk.

A retrospective chart review of 96 residents in six intermediate care facilities in the United States found an association between anorexia and poor weight status and confusion in 42 residents.8 A prospective six-month study involving 309 residents of an intermediate nursing home in suburban midwestern United States found the primary reasons for weight changes to be acute illness, dementia and changes in the mucous membranes of the mouth and gums.9

Most seniors experience a steady decline in strength and endurance as they age, especially after age 75. Yoga routines for seniors help improve balance, strength and mobility, allowing for continued independence in later years as well as improving such characteristic health problems as arthritis, constipation and hypertension. Among other benefits, yoga practice promotes an increase in self-reported quality of life, as reported in a 2011 study published in the “International Journal of Yoga.”

Today 72 percent of boomer men and 67 percent of boomer women are overweight or obese. By 2030, this generation will experience almost double the incident of having all three chronic conditions of hypertension, heart disease and diabetes. Researchers found almost 39 percent of baby boomers were obese, compared to about 29 percent of adults in the previous generation. Boomers were also more inactive, with 52 percent of them reporting a sedentary lifestyle with no physical activity, compared with only 17.4 percent of the previous generation. Baby boomers were also more likely to have diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol than their parents. Overall, 32 percent of adults in the previous generation reported they were in “excellent” health, compared with only 13 percent of baby boomers.

But research shows that other factors can correlate with excessive weight gain, too. Obese boomers are about half as likely to have a college degree as boomers who are at a healthy weight, according to the UCLA data. They are more likely to be low-income and less likely to own their own homes. And they’re 35 percent more likely to smoke.

One small case–control study (three publications) compared 14 patients who had anorexia with 10 control patients.14–16 The patients with anorexia had a median age of 78 (standard deviation [SD] 8) years and BMI of 18.4 (SD 0.6) kg/m2 in the absence of any organic or mental disorders. Women in the baby boomer generation are somewhat more likely than men of the same age to feel that they are overweight, and less likely to feel that their weight is “about right.” Fifty-nine percent of baby boomer women say they are overweight, compared with 48% of baby boomer men. Setting realistic goals. When you have to lose a significant amount of weight, you may set goals that are unrealistic, such as trying to lose too much too fast. Don’t set yourself up for failure. There is some debate, however, about whether it’s good for elderly people to lose weight, even if they are obese. Some studies have found an association between weight loss in seniors and mortality risk, but Villareal says many of those studies did not distinguish between voluntary weight loss and involuntary weight loss that may be related to illness.
For the better part of 71 years, Joe Acosta ate what he wanted or what his wife prepared for him – often, large portions of fried foods. As a result, he carried 30-some pounds of extra weight and flirted with diabetes. “I was having problems watching what I put in my body,” says Acosta, a retired U.S. Postal Service employee in Brooklyn, New York.
You also need strength training activities at least two days a week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Strength training will prevent you from losing muscle as you age. Get the full benefit of strength training by completing eight to 12 repetitions until it’s difficult to complete a repetition without getting help. Lifting weights, resistance bands, heavy gardening or yoga are examples of strength training activities for older women.
One problem with using weight-for-height tables is that doctors disagree over which is the best table to use. Several versions are available. Many have different weight ranges, and some tables account for a person’s frame size, age and sex, while other tables do not.
Unintentional weight loss in persons older than 65 years is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The most common etiologies are malignancy, nonmalignant gastrointestinal disease, and psychiatric conditions. Overall, nonmalignant diseases are more common causes of unintentional weight loss in this population than malignancy. Medication use and polypharmacy can interfere with taste or cause nausea and should not be overlooked. Social factors may contribute to unintentional weight loss. A readily identifiable cause is not found in 16% to 28% of cases. Recommended tests include a complete blood count, basic metabolic panel, liver function tests, thyroid function tests, C-reactive protein levels, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, glucose measurement, lactate dehydrogenase measurement, and urinalysis. Chest radiography and fecal occult blood testing should be performed. Abdominal ultrasonography may also be considered. When baseline evaluation is unremarkable, a three- to six-month observation period is justified. Treatment focuses on the underlying cause. Nutritional supplements and flavor enhancers, and dietary modification that takes into account patient preferences and chewing or swallowing disabilities may be considered. Appetite stimulants may increase weight but have serious adverse effects and no evidence of decreased mortality.
Improved medical care also could be contributing to rising disability, Martin suggested. People whose disabilities began early in life are now living longer. “It could be seen as good news: improved survival for people with Down syndrome or spinal cord injuries who might have not reached middle age in the past,” she said.
Aim for roughly 30 grams at each meal, and more if you tend to crave carb-rich foods. “In my practice, I notice that dietary patterns tend to shift somewhat with age, and as people get older, the calories that were once spent on lean protein might now be spent on carbohydrates or fats.” Not only does adequate protein help support muscle growth and repair (which, when coupled with resistance training, will help increase metabolic rate and overall calorie burn), but it’s also more satiating than carbs and fats, meaning you’ll be less likely to reach for unhealthy snacks, says Bowerman. Behavior modification is a fancy name for changing your attitude toward food and exercise. These changes promote new habits and attitudes that help you lose weight. Many people find they cannot lose weight or keep it off unless they change these attitudes. Behavior-modification techniques are easy to learn and practice. Most involve increasing your awareness of situations in which you overeat so that you can stop overeating.
Sexual function may also be affected by obesity. Data from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, (26) the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), (27) and the Massachusetts Male Aging Study (28) indicate that the odds of developing erectile dysfunction increase with increasing BMI. Of note, weight loss appears to be mildly helpful in maintaining erectile function. (29) The effect of obesity on female sexual function is less clear. In a recent French study, obese women were less likely than normal-weight women to report having had a sexual partner in the preceding 12 months, but the prevalence of sexual dysfunction was similar in both groups. (30) In a smaller survey of 118 women, Esposito and colleagues found that obese women had lower scores on the Female Sexual Function Index, with strong correlations between increasing BMI and problems with arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction. A combination of healthy diet and exercise (when you stick to it) appears to work better than either one alone. Sticking to a weight reduction program is difficult and requires a lot of support from family and friends.
Change the treats you give. As dog owners we can’t go without rewarding our pets with a treat or two. But it’s important to look at how many treats and what kind of treats you give your dog as they can quickly add up to a lot of calories. Consider giving your pooch healthy dog treats or low-calorie smaller treats, especially if you reward your dog during training on a regular basis.
Any good diet plan will include exercise. It helps to increase metabolism and is one less opportunity to eat during the day. You should exercise for at least 30 minutes, five times a week. Regular exercise also helps your heart and lungs and lowers triglyceride levels that can cause heart disease. It also increases the HDL (“good cholesterol”) levels. Even simple measures such as taking stairs instead of the elevator and short walks eventually add up to a lot of calories burned. Type 2 diabetes is among the most serious health risks of obesity. Type 2 diabetes, the most common form, means that a person’s body does not use insulin properly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes is doubled in overweight or obese people. Left untreated, it can lead to premature death, heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, kidney disease, stroke, and blindness. Fortunately, researchers are beginning to understand the differences between the wrong mix and a healthy one, as well as the specific factors that shape those differences. They hope to learn how to cultivate this inner ecosystem in ways that could prevent—and possibly treat—obesity, which doctors define as having a particular ratio of height and weight, known as the body mass index, that is greater than 30. Imagine, for example, foods, baby formulas or supplements devised to promote virtuous microbes while suppressing the harmful types. “We need to think about designing foods from the inside out,” suggests Jeffrey Gordon of Washington University in St. Louis. Keeping our gut microbes happy could be the elusive secret to weight control.

The evaluation of unintentional weight loss starts with a patient history. If there is a concern about cognitive impairment, a caregiver or family member can provide corroborating information. The history should focus on the amount of weight lost and the time frame in which the weight loss occurred. If no baseline weight is available, evidence of change in clothing size, confirmation of weight loss by a relative or friend, and a numerical estimate of weight loss can be used.11–16  Assessing appetite determines if the weight loss is related to poor food intake. A review of systems to detect acute illness or worsening chronic conditions is important and should pay particular attention to cardiovascular, respiratory, and gastrointestinal symptoms (Table 3).

The numbers are stark. For the next 30 years, it is not enough for the millennial generation to adopt sustainable best practices. They include: type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, gallstones, heart disease, fatty liver disease, sleep apnea, GERD, stress incontinence, heart failure, degenerative joint disease, birth defects, miscarriages, asthma and other respiratory conditions, and numerous cancers.
• Psychiatric. Weight loss is depression’s key symptom and may be present with bipolar, personality, dysmorphic, and anxiety disorders, as well as substance abuse and alcoholism, and nicotine addiction. 5
The thrifty gene hypothesis postulates that, due to dietary scarcity during human evolution, people are prone to obesity. Their ability to take advantage of rare periods of abundance by storing energy as fat would be advantageous during times of varying food availability, and individuals with greater adipose reserves would be more likely to survive famine. This tendency to store fat, however, would be maladaptive in societies with stable food supplies.[126] This theory has received various criticisms, and other evolutionarily-based theories such as the drifty gene hypothesis and the thrifty phenotype hypothesis have also been proposed.[127][128]
Flexibility and balance are also factors important to health that decrease with age. Leading a sedentary lifestyle can cause connective tissues to weaken and joints to stiffen. Ultimately, the lack of activity affects a person’s range of motion, balance and posture.
Sudden or rapid weight loss is considered to be a significant risk factor for seniors. It can be a sign of a serious health condition, and is invariably associated with a decline in overall health and an increase in mortality (9% to 38% within two years). Frail seniors more than 20 percent below their ideal body weight are more susceptible to a wide range of health problems, injuries and complications. They experience a marked decline in the ability to perform activities of daily living, and must often be relocated to care facilities as a result.
Environmental: The world around us can have a significant impact on the development of obesity. What we eat, our level of physical activity, and our lifestyle choices are all influenced by our environment. Children who grew up in a household were parents did not eat healthy foods or chose to eat at fast food restaurants instead of preparing food at home may grow up to adopt these unhealthy eating habits. Additionally, there are some neighborhoods that do not have sidewalks or accessible recreation areas, making it more difficult for residents to engage in physical activity. It has also been suggested that those with lower education or who live in poverty are at an increased risk for becoming obese, which may due to the fact that high-calorie, processed food is less expensive and easier to make than healthier foods.
Some research shows that obese people are less likely to be hired for a job and are less likely to be promoted.[196] Obese people are also paid less than their non-obese counterparts for an equivalent job; obese women on average make 6% less and obese men make 3% less.[212]

A common form of short stature, achondroplasia (dwarfism) is a genetic condition causing a disorder of bone growth. Complications of achondroplasia that need monitoring include (this is not all inclusive) stenosis and compression of the spinal cord, a large opening under the skull, lordosis, kyphosis, spinal stenosis, hydrocephalus, middle ear infections, obesity, and dental crowning. Achondroplasia is caused by mutations of the FGFR3 gene.

Baby boomers are currently in mid-life and over the next several decades they will swell the ranks of those aged 65 and over. Their entry into this age group will have a significant impact in a number of areas but particularly in relation to the type and extent of health services required. Obesity is a major health issue for this cohort as its members are significantly over-represented in both the overweight and obese categories compared to the rest of the population. In addition, they are significantly more likely to have multiple risk factors. This review considers how alterations to lifestyle, initiated by the rapid social changes of the last half century, might have contributed to obesity within this cohort. In providing this broad overview it focuses on how increased affluence and changes to everyday institutions have affected the cultures around food consumption. This includes a consideration of both the internal and external ways in which eating environments are now constructed. This review suggests that further research is needed to identify the factors which facilitate or constrain healthy ageing in the baby boom cohort. Research along these lines also needs to consider both macro- and micro-level changes to the social context within which these factors arise. This is essential as the high levels of obesity in this cohort may reflect both an individual and a structural lag in adapting lifestyles and policies to meet the needs of this very different social environment.

Lack of access to healthy foods. Some people don’t live in neighborhoods with supermarkets that sell healthy foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables. Or, for some people, these healthy foods are too costly.
The Pollanites didn’t invent resistance to healthier popular foods, as the fates of the McLean Deluxe and Olestra demonstrate, but they’ve greatly intensified it. Fast food and junk food have their core customer base, and the wholesome-food gurus have theirs. In between sit many millions of Americans—the more the idea that processed food should be shunned no matter what takes hold in this group, the less incentive fast-food joints will have to continue edging away from the fat- and problem-carb-laden fare beloved by their most loyal customers to try to broaden their appeal.
Diagnosis of obesity is made by observation and by comparing the patient’s weight to ideal weight charts. Many doctors and obesity researchers refer to the body mass index (BMI), which uses a height-weight relationship to calculate an individual’s ideal weight and personal risk of developing obesity-related health problems. The most accurate means of measuring body fat content involves immersing a person in water and measuring relative displacement; however, this method is very impractical and is usually only used in scientific studies requiring very specific assessments. Women whose body fat exceeds 30% and men whose body fat exceeds 25% are generally considered obese.

Boomers have a lot to gain by losing a little. Many already have obesity-related health conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Recent research indicates that an average reduction of 3.74 pounds (1.7 kilograms) per person would result in 178,000 fewer cases of coronary heart disease and 890,000 fewer diabetics [source: Goodwin].
