Luckily, many weight-loss options are available, even for people who have tried earnestly but unsuccessfully to lose weight through diet, exercise, or prior weight-loss surgery. At the Houston UT MIST Center for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, our team of specialists can help you understand the causes and health risks of obesity, as well as the wide range of treatment options available to help you reach your target weight-loss goal and prevent obesity-related health risks.
For most people, obesity becomes a lifelong struggle. Obesity is caused by multiple factors, and although the principle of decreased caloric intake and increase in exercise is a relatively simple concept, there are many underlying reasons that lead to obesity in an individual. Treatment, therefore, has to take all of this into consideration. The need to manage obesity is clear as obesity increases your risk of many other diseases and health problems, including the following:
Consistent with cognitive epidemiological data, numerous studies confirm that obesity is associated with cognitive deficits. Whether obesity causes cognitive deficits, or vice versa is unclear at present.
Bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA): There are two methods of the BIA. One involves standing on a special scale with footpads. harmless amount of electrical current is sent through the body, and then percentage of body fat is calculated. The other type of BIA involves electrodes that are typically placed on a wrist and an ankle and on the back of the right hand and on the top of the foot. The change in voltage between the electrodes is measured. The person’s body fat percentage is then calculated from the results of the BIA. Early on, this method showed variable results. Newer equipment and methods of analysis seem to have improved this method.

One of the main causes of health problems in senior dogs is excessive weight gain. It is a normal part of the aging process but can also be caused by underlying issues. It is up to you to take your pet for regular check-ups at the veterinarian to rule out any of the diseases that plague older dogs, but you can also help your old dog maintain a healthy weight with a regular regime of exercises and appropriate senior dog diet.

“Baby boomers who are not obese and younger generations are going to have to foot the trillions of dollars in health care costs for the millions of unhealthy boomers,” Slome explains. “Healthy boomers approaching retirement have very little time left to develop a plan so they are not left depending on already strapped government programs or forced to deplete whatever retirement savings they managed to squirrel away.”
Physician-supervised weight-loss programs provide treatment in a clinical setting with a licensed healthcare professional, such as a medical doctor, nurse, registered dietitian and/or psychologist. These programs typically offer services such as nutrition education, pharmacotherapy, physical activity and behavioral therapy.
