Certain medications may cause you to gain weight. These include some corticosteroids, antidepressants, and seizure medications. Medication can slow the rate at which your body burns calories, increase your appetite, or cause your body to hold extra water. All of these factors can lead to weight gain. If weight gain is a side effect of a medication you are taking, talk to your doctor about potentially switching to a different medication that isn’t associated with weight gain.
Studies of identical twins, who have been raised apart, show that genes strongly influence a person’s weight. Vulnerability to weight gain and obesity tends to run in families. Your chances of being overweight are greater if one or both of your parents are overweight or obese.
In Pandora’s Lunchbox, Melanie Warner assiduously catalogs every concern that could possibly be raised about the health threats of food processing, leveling accusations so weakly supported, tired, or insignificant that only someone already convinced of the guilt of processed food could find them troubling. While ripping the covers off the breakfast-cereal conspiracy, for example, Warner reveals that much of the nutritional value claimed by these products comes not from natural ingredients but from added vitamins that are chemically synthesized, which must be bad for us because, well, they’re chemically synthesized. It’s the tautology at the heart of the movement: processed foods are unhealthy because they aren’t natural, full stop.
Because of the weight and size of their bodies, obese people have difficulty moving, including getting up, getting down, and engaging in all types of ambulatory activities. In choosing equipment, then, obese adults typically prefer upright or recumbent stationary cycles that support their weight instead of treadmills and stair-climbing machines that do not. Therefore, for your overweight clients, try to include machine exercises that can accommodate their larger frames and that are structurally sturdy enough to support their weight (plus that of the load or weight that they are using). Avoid exercises such as the machine hip/leg press because of the challenges it presents in getting into position to perform the exercise as well as simply getting into and out of the machine.
Each of us begins to assemble a unique congregation of microbes the moment we pass through the birth canal, acquiring our mother’s bacteria first and continuing to gather new members from the environment throughout life. By studying the genes of these various microbes—collectively referred to as the microbiome—investigators have identified many of the most common residents, although these can vary greatly from person to person and among different human populations. In recent years researchers have begun the transition from mere census taking to determining the kind of jobs these minute inhabitants fill in the human body and the effect they have on our overall health.

In summary, a comprehensive history together with a physical examination should be the first step in eliciting the cause or causes of the weight loss. This step includes screening for potential risk factors and assessing current medications. Computed tomographic screening is of limited value. Instead, diagnostic testing should be directed toward areas of concern based on the history and physical examination.
Many wholesome foodies insist that the food industry won’t make serious progress toward healthier fare unless forced to by regulation. I, for one, believe regulation aimed at speeding the replacement of obesogenic foods with appealing healthier foods would be a great idea. But what a lot of foodies really want is to ban the food industry from selling junk food altogether. And that is just a fantasy. The government never managed to keep the tobacco companies from selling cigarettes, and banning booze (the third-most-deadly consumable killer after cigarettes and food) didn’t turn out so well. The two most health-enlightened, regulation-friendly major cities in America, New York and San Francisco, tried to halt sales of two of the most horrific fast-food assaults on health—giant servings of sugared beverages and kids’ fast-food meals accompanied by toys, respectively—and neither had much luck. Michelle Obama is excoriated by conservatives for asking schools to throw more fruits and vegetables into the lunches they serve. Realistically, the most we can hope for is a tax on some obesogenic foods. The research of Lisa Powell, the University of Illinois professor, suggests that a 20 percent tax on sugary beverages would reduce consumption by about 25 percent. (As for fatty foods, no serious tax proposal has yet been made in the U.S., and if one comes along, the wholesome foodies might well join the food industry and most consumers in opposing it. Denmark did manage to enact a fatty-food tax, but it was deemed a failure when consumers went next door into Germany and Sweden to stock up on their beloved treats.)
The large share of elderly also means that Social Security and Medicare expenditures will increase from a combined 8 percent of gross domestic product today to 12 percent by 2050. “These challenges could be managed through structural changes to existing entitlement programs, an increase in retirement savings among workers, and by providing incentives to shift retirement to later ages,” Mather says.

Likewise, increasing your activity level is largely a matter of changing your attitude. You don’t have to become a marathon runner. Thirty minutes of aerobic activity five days a week will make a significant difference in your health. Look for ways to increase your activity level doing things you enjoy.
While not a dramatic increase in percentage terms, she described the trend as meaningful in terms of numbers of people. The 1 percent increase represents about 365,000 more people who are having difficulty or who are unable to carry out basic personal care activities and daily tasks central to living independently, she calculated.

The most effective treatment for obesity is bariatric surgery. The types of procedures include laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, vertical-sleeve gastrectomy, and biliopancreatic diversion. Surgery for severe obesity is associated with long-term weight loss, improvement in obesity related conditions, and decreased overall mortality. One study found a weight loss of between 14% and 25% (depending on the type of procedure performed) at 10 years, and a 29% reduction in all cause mortality when compared to standard weight loss measures. Complications occur in about 17% of cases and reoperation is needed in 7% of cases. Due to its cost and risks, researchers are searching for other effective yet less invasive treatments including devices that occupy space in the stomach.
The study also found that a significant proportion of baby boomers who are not obese are overweight. Health experts note that if baby boomers continue with present levels of weight and physical inactivity, they are going to become expensive. “Experts know their medical costs due to obesity-related illnesses and conditions will grow,” Slome explains.
I’m 72, 60-80 lbs overweight. For past 20 yrs I’ve suffered from cancer, serious blood diseases for which I took heavy doses of Predisone, suffered a large DVT/PE’s which left me weakened and overweight (from steroids).

Osteoarthritis, a chronic inflammation that damages the cartilage and bone in or around the affected joint. It can cause mild or severe pain and usually affects weight-bearing joints in people who are obese. It is a major cause of knee replacement surgery in patients who are obese for a long time.
Physical inactivity. Sedentary people burn fewer calories than people who are active. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) showed that physical inactivity was strongly correlated with weight gain in both sexes.

A type of compression neuropathy (nerve damage) caused by compression and irritation of the median nerve in the wrist. The nerve is compressed within the carpal tunnel, a bony canal in the palm side of the wrist that provides passage for the median nerve to the hand. The irritation of the median nerve is specifically due to pressure from the transverse carpal ligament.
According to a report by Claire Wang — researcher at the Department of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health — and her colleagues, the rising burden of obesity among people 60 and older is intensifying. Of the 65 million additional obese people projected in the U.S. in 2030, 24 million would be in this age range.

Just as in younger people, the prevalence of obesity has increased in the elderly. About 20 percent of people 65 and older are obese, and that is expected to continue rising as more baby boomers become senior citizens. Elevated weight is known to be associated with impairments in daily living, limitations in mobility and an increased risk for physical decline and frailty.
Doctors may also note how a person carries excess weight on his or her body. Studies have shown that this factor may indicate whether or not an individual has a predisposition to develop certain diseases or conditions that may accompany obesity. “Apple-shaped” individuals who store most of their weight around the waist and abdomen are at greater risk for cancer, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes than “pear-shaped” people whose extra pounds settle primarily in their hips and thighs.
Among recent studies, researchers at the University of Washington School of Medicine found that a combination of diet and exercise was the most effective method for obese seniors to improve their physical performance. Dieting alone could improve a senior’s physical performance by 12%, while exercise alone could bring a 15% improvement. And according to Science Daily, a combination of dieting and exercise yielded a 21% improvement.
The study of the effect of infectious agents on metabolism is still in its early stages. Gut flora has been shown to differ between lean and obese humans. There is an indication that gut flora in obese and lean individuals can affect the metabolic potential. This apparent alteration of the metabolic potential is believed to confer a greater capacity to harvest energy contributing to obesity. Whether these differences are the direct cause or the result of obesity has yet to be determined unequivocally.

Interestingly, this is the second time the report, now in its 14th year, found declines in nationwide obesity rates supporting “trends that have shown steadying levels in recent years,” the report notes. The national obesity rate is nearly 38 percent.
Through its growing sway over health-conscious consumers and policy makers, the wholesome-food movement is impeding the progress of the one segment of the food world that is actually positioned to take effective, near-term steps to reverse the obesity trend: the processed-food industry. Popular food producers, fast-food chains among them, are already applying various tricks and technologies to create less caloric and more satiating versions of their junky fare that nonetheless retain much of the appeal of the originals, and could be induced to go much further. In fact, these roundly demonized companies could do far more for the public’s health in five years than the wholesome-food movement is likely to accomplish in the next 50. But will the wholesome-food advocates let them?
