Factors that may contribute to weight gain among adults and youth include genes, eating habits, physical inactivity, TV, computer, phone, and other screen time, sleep habits, medical conditions or medications, and where and how people live, including their access to healthy foods and safe places to be active.1,6

That science is, in fact, fairly straightforward. Fat carries more than twice as many calories as carbohydrates and proteins do per gram, which means just a little fat can turn a serving of food into a calorie bomb. Sugar and other refined carbohydrates, like white flour and rice, and high-starch foods, like corn and potatoes, aren’t as calorie-dense. But all of these “problem carbs” charge into the bloodstream as glucose in minutes, providing an energy rush, commonly followed by an energy crash that can lead to a surge in appetite.

Obesity not only lowers a child’s quality of life during childhood, but overweight and obese children are likely to stay obese into adulthood and to develop obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease at a younger age.

Eating less is a key factor in weight loss, lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of heart disease. Even if you eat a regular diet, which for many of us is loaded with fat, the addition of Chitosan makes it a low-fat, low-calorie diet. The taste buds are happy because it tastes good, and the body is happy because less fat is absorbed.

The AP’s poll was conducted from June 3-12 by Knowledge Networks of Menlo Park, Calif., and involved online interviews with 1,416 adults, including 1,078 baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964. Knowledge Networks used traditional telephone and mail sampling methods to randomly recruit respondents. People selected who had no Internet access were given it free.

If ever there was a time to focus on getting enough lean protein, it’s now. “There is some evidence that older adults need more protein,” says Susan Bowerman, RD, a dietitian in Los Angeles. A study at the University of Arkansas found that increasing protein intake could help older adults build muscle. That can help counteract age-related muscle loss, says Bowerman.

The investigators used the Physical Performance Test, a test that evaluates an individual’s ability to perform tasks, such as walking 50 feet, putting on and removing a coat, standing up from a chair, picking up a penny, climbing a flight of stairs and lifting a book.

Kelly et al. (2011) recruited 28 sedentary, obese adults who were weight stable for the previous six months. The group was randomly allocated to exercise plus either a low-glycemic index (LGI) or high-glycemic index (HGI) diet. Participants engaged in five exercise sessions per week for 60 minutes at 85% maximum heart rate. All food was provided and balanced for macronutrients and both groups lost similar amounts of weight over the six month intervention. Weight, FM, FFM, truncal fat, fasting plasma glucose and insulin decreased in both groups, but did not differ between groups. Glycemic response reduced only in the LGI group. Plasma and mononuclear cells (MNC)-derived TNFα reduced in the LGI group, but increased in the HGI group. Secretion of IL-6 from MNC and plasma IL-6 and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) was reduced in the LGI group. Change in MNC-derived TNFα and plasma MCP-1 correlated with decreased glycemic response. It was concluded that a LGI diet plus exercise decreased inflammatory markers, whereas a HGI diet attenuated improvements in glycemia and inflammation that usually occur with exercise. One proposed mechanism was the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH), which results in reactive oxygen species that activates the NFkB pathway, and increases TNF-α (Mohanty 2000; Evans 2002; Ghanim 2004). Hypertrophied adipocytes in obesity are partially responsible for the secretion of IL-6, and are thus regulated by not only weight loss, but also hyperglycemia and physical activity. The decrease of MCP-1 in the LGI group associated with changes in plasma glucose was attributed to reduced stimulus to recruit MNC into adipose tissue, seen as improved glucose tolerance. This implies an improvement in adipose tissue function, and the investigators concluded that eating a LGI diet in combination with aerobic exercise can reverse the effects of obesity on proinflammatory cytokines, which appears independent of weight loss.

Other possible mechanisms by which obesity could affect cancer risk include changes in the mechanical properties of the scaffolding that surrounds breast cells (30) and altered immune responses, effects on the nuclear factor kappa beta system, and oxidative stress (31).

Since 2007, diabetes treatment programs have remained largely unchanged while the rates of two main risk factors — obesity and old age — have risen. Including calisthenic exercises such as sit-ups, push-ups, and pull-ups is an option, but excess bodyweight significantly limits the number of repetitions that overweight or obese clients can perform. Therefore, these activities may limit improvement and be embarrassing for them to attempt. Designing programs that include the use of machines or free-weight equipment may avoid this problem, because resistance loads can be easily adjusted to match each client’s strength level. For example, the free-weight bench press works the same muscles as push-ups do, and the weight-assisted chin and dip machine is nearly identical to pull-ups in its effect on the muscles worked. Although your client may not have the strength to complete push-ups or pull-ups, load assignments in the bench press and weight-assisted chin and dip machine, respectively, can be reduced enough to enable him or her to perform the 8 to 12 reps recommended in chapter 4.

For starters, it’s even more important than ever to actually follow the advice to talk to your doc before beginning any new exercise regimen. “Medical problems, such as heart disease and metabolic disease, become more common after age 60, so it becomes much more important to have a medical checkup before attempting a fat loss plan,” says Huizenga. Then there’s the fact that over the age of 60, your oxygen intake may be reduced by as much as one-third of what it was when you were 25, causing you to have a tougher time taking deep breaths when you’re exercising at a moderate to high intensity, and making it crucial to ease in to a new plan. Finally, this is the decade when your hips, knees, and other key joints are more likely to develop arthritis, which means that your old go-to running or aerobics workouts may need to be swapped for swimming and/or gentle walking plans.

Guar gum preparations have also been promoted as a weight-loss agent. Guar gum is thought to work by leading to a feeling of fullness early in the meal. It has not been scientifically proven and has been associated with abdominal pain, gas, and diarrhea.

“Weight gain is occurring, but it’s not just because of aging,” says Wojtek Chodzko-Zajko, head of the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “It’s what we eat, our lifestyle habits, how much screen time we get … all of those kinds of factors are having an impact.”

I’m 72, 60-80 lbs overweight. For past 20 yrs I’ve suffered from cancer, serious blood diseases for which I took heavy doses of Predisone, suffered a large DVT/PE’s which left me weakened and overweight (from steroids).

Of course, if you don’t have a consistent weight training regimen, you’ll want to start slowly and lift light weights; this will give your body time to adapt without placing too much strain on your muscles or joints and help you avoid injury, says Huizenga. However, don’t get too comfortable with an easy resistance-training program. It is important to aim to gradually increase the amount of weight you lift. “It’s critical that significant resistance exercise be incorporated into any fat loss plan over age 60.” Once you can do 10 to 12 reps with, say, a 5-pound dumbbell and feel like you could keep going, it’s time to upgrade to an 8-pound weight, and so forth. “You know you’re lifting the right amount of weight if you can just barely make it to the end of your repetitions before needing to rest,” he says.

Making healthier choices. To make your overall diet healthier, eat more plant-based foods, such as fruits, vegetables and whole-grain carbohydrates. Also emphasize lean sources of protein — such as beans, lentils and soy — and lean meats. If you like fish, try to include fish twice a week. Limit salt and added sugar. Stick with low-fat dairy products. Eat small amounts of fats, and make sure they come from heart-healthy sources, such as olive, canola and nut oils.

One small case–control study (three publications) compared 14 patients who had anorexia with 10 control patients.14–16 The patients with anorexia had a median age of 78 (standard deviation [SD] 8) years and BMI of 18.4 (SD 0.6) kg/m2 in the absence of any organic or mental disorders. Data from the control group were collected retrospectively by reviewing 24 hospital records of persons over 65 years of age in whom a lumbar puncture had been performed to rule out a meningeal syndrome. The 10 patients in the control group were selected because they were nonsmokers and had a normal body weight (i.e., within 10% of their ideal body weight). The study primarily focused on examining the changes in anthropometric parameters, amino acids, neuropeptides and cytokine levels associated with anorexia. Of the 14 anorectic patients, five received treatment with megestrol acetate (480 mg/day) for six months. There were no changes in anthropometric parameters with treatment. The only significant changes in laboratory parameters were an increase in plasma transferrin level (p < 0.05) and an increase in CSF β-endorphin levels (p < 0.05).
