Children in low- and middle-income countries are more vulnerable to inadequate pre-natal, infant, and young child nutrition. At the same time, these children are exposed to high-fat, high-sugar, high-salt, energy-dense, and micronutrient-poor foods, tend to be lower in cost but also lower in nutrient quality. These dietary patterns, in conjunction with lower levels of physical activity, result in sharp increases in childhood obesity while undernutrition issues remain unsolved.
While this research paradox carries on, obesity in our elders can’t be ignored. Being overweight or obese can be exacerbated in some people after retirement because they have more free time to sit around and aren’t as active as when they were younger or worked. On the other hand, baby boomers are being forced to delay retirement because of the economy. So many of those people are at desk jobs all day instead of being able to retire and be active.
Many scientists who work on the microbiome think their research will inspire a new generation of tools to treat and prevent obesity. Still, researchers are quick to point out that this is a young field with far more questions than answers. “Data from human studies are a lot messier than the mouse data,” observes Claire Fraser of the University of Maryland, who is studying obesity and gut microbes in the Old Order Amish population. Even in a homogeneous population such as the Amish, she says, there is vast individual variation that makes it difficult to isolate the role of microbiota in a complex disease like obesity.
The body uses this mineral to produce a substance known as Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF), which is important in regulating blood sugar and triglycerides. Chromium supplements are used to reduce cravings for sweets and carbohydrates, to increase muscle tone and elevate energy levels.

Gordon’s team then repeated the experiment with one small twist: after giving the baby mice microbes from their respective twins, they moved the animals into a shared cage. This time both groups remained lean. Studies showed that the mice carrying microbes from the obese human had picked up some of their lean roommates’ gut bacteria—especially varieties of Bacteroidetes—probably by consuming their feces, a typical, if unappealing, mouse behavior. To further prove the point, the researchers transferred 54 varieties of bacteria from some lean mice to those with the obese-type community of germs and found that the animals that had been destined to become obese developed a healthy weight instead. Transferring just 39 strains did not do the trick. “Taken together, these experiments provide pretty compelling proof that there is a cause-and-effect relationship and that it was possible to prevent the development of obesity,” Gordon says.
The amount of physical activity you should do may be different from other people your age if you’re underweight, have mobility problems or a disability. Your GP or practice nurse can advise you about this.
This systematic review focused on randomized controlled trails in obese adults aged 65 years and older. The authors acknowledge that of the ten studies, three reported on the same cohort of 27 participants (Villareal 2006a; Villareal 2006b; Villareal 2008), and three reported on the same cohort of 107 participants (Villareal 2011a; Shah 2011; Armamento-Villareal 2012). The remaining studies had small sample sizes, which although limiting statistical power and inference, do provide initial mechanistic findings in humans, of which few studies exist. Just one article was included that met our inclusion criteria and reported on long-term weight maintenance.

There is controversy in regard to carbohydrates and weight loss. When carbohydrates are restricted, people often experience rapid initial weight loss within the first two weeks. This weight loss is due mainly to fluid loss. When carbohydrates are added back to the diet, weight gain often occurs, simply due to a regain of the fluid.
Several tools have been developed to aid physicians in remembering the multiple etiologies of unintentional weight loss. These include the mnemonic Meals on Wheels (medication effects; emotional problems, especially depression; anorexia nervosa; alcoholism; late-life paranoia; swallowing disorders; oral factors, such as poorly fitting dentures and caries; no money; wandering and other dementia-related behaviors; hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, hyperparathyroidism, and hypoadrenalism; enteric problems; eating problems, such as inability to feed oneself; low-salt and low-cholesterol diet; stones; social problems, such as isolation and inability to obtain preferred foods).20 Another tool is the 9 D’s of weight loss in the elderly (dementia, dentition, depression, diarrhea, disease [acute and chronic], drugs, dysfunction [functional disability], dysgeusia, dysphagia).21

BMI is a useful measure of overweight and obesity. It is calculated from your height and weight. BMI is an estimate of body fat and a good gauge of your risk for diseases that can occur with more body fat. The higher your BMI, the higher your risk for certain diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems, and certain cancers.
As an older adult, there are special considerations to take into account if you want to lose weight. Your lifestyle may have changed over the past several years, you may be living alone and you may have medical issues to consider.
As for Anne Roberson, she says the extra weight she has long carried around on her petite frame has begun taking a toll on her joints, her sleep and her mood. On a recent morning, Roberson listened politely to Dr. Mylene Middleton Rucker, her longtime physician, during her first Medicare weight loss counseling session. Rucker suggested she eat more vegetables and less meat and encouraged her to join a local exercise class.
First of all, he needs to be told bluntly that wife, son and daughter are not personal servants of any healthy man. Illness is a different case. He be told to attend to all the work himself, if he does not consider his overweight as problem, and he considers himself as healthy. I suggest all of you withdraw for about half a day, watch from a distance and let him feel the pinch. His thinking needs to be shaken first of all.
A full thyroid panel is needed to identify hypothyroidism in dogs. Your vet will put your dog on thyroid supplementation and ask you to bring him in for periodic re-testing. If all goes well, he should slim down and get back some of his energy, keeping in mind that senior dogs aren’t as active as when they were younger.
Because the endocrine system produces hormones that help maintain energy balances in the body, the following endocrine disorders or tumors affecting the endocrine system can cause overweight and obesity.
When we grow older, especially if ill and not really physically active, we tend to lose our muscle mass. It gets replaced with fat. Our BMI may not change, but in reality, our fat-stores increase and so does the chance of being affected by obesity and its related diseases. BMI can also be inaccurate in the elderly for another common reason. As we grow old, we often get shorter. This is due to osteoporosis and spinal vertebral issues that take away inches in older age. If you remember that the BMI is a measure calculated from height and weight, you will understand that a change in height will change BMI as well. In fact, if one weighs the same, and their height is less, then the BMI will be falsely higher and one might be classified as “overweight” while in reality, he/she is not. Scientists and physicians still debate about a better measure for weight classification, but for now, BMI is the accepted one and physicians need to use it while understanding its limitations.
These tables give general ranges of healthy weights and overweight for adult height. The tables do not take into account individual conditions. For one thing, they do not distinguish fat from muscle, water, or bone. They are much less helpful than body mass index in identifying risk of health problems related to weight.
