The impact of obesity on the chances of our living long, productive, and enjoyable lives has been so well documented at this point that I hate to drag anyone through the grim statistics again. But let me just toss out one recent dispatch from the world of obesity-havoc science: a study published in February in the journal Obesity found that obese young adults and middle-agers in the U.S. are likely to lose almost a decade of life on average, as compared with their non-obese counterparts. Given our obesity rates, that means Americans who are alive today can collectively expect to sacrifice 1 billion years to obesity. The study adds to a river of evidence suggesting that for the first time in modern history—and in spite of many health-related improvements in our environment, our health care, and our nondietary habits—our health prospects are worsening, mostly because of excess weight.
Other reasons for not being active include relying on cars instead of walking, fewer physical demands at work or at home because of modern technology and conveniences, and lack of physical education in schools for children.
There are mental complications as well. Obesity affects cognition, which includes the way we process information, memory, comprehension, problem solving, and decisions. These functions are known to deteriorate with age, and studies show that they deteriorate more rapidly in the population affected by obesity. Since proper cognition help seniors to live fuller and more independent lives, this effect of obesity is more relevant than ever as we age.
Nevertheless, the follow-up study of weight and breast cancer in the Women’s Health Initiative (36) found that for women who were already overweight or obese at baseline, weight change (either gain or loss) was not associated with breast cancer risk during follow-up. However, for women who were of normal weight at baseline, gaining more than 5% of body weight was associated with increased breast cancer risk.

Obese people often have chronic low-level inflammation, which can, over time, cause DNA damage that leads to cancer. Overweight and obese individuals are more likely than normal-weight individuals to have conditions or disorders that are linked to or that cause chronic local inflammation and that are risk factors for certain cancers (26). For example, chronic local inflammation induced by gastroesophageal reflux disease or Barrett esophagus is a likely cause of esophageal adenocarcinoma. Obesity is a risk factor for gallstones, a condition characterized by chronic gallbladder inflammation, and a history of gallstones is a strong risk factor for gallbladder cancer (27). Chronic ulcerative colitis (a chronic inflammatory condition) and hepatitis (a disease of the liver causing inflammation) are risk factors for different types of liver cancer (28).
BMI is a useful measure of overweight and obesity. It is calculated from your height and weight. BMI is an estimate of body fat and a good gauge of your risk for diseases that can occur with more body fat. Obesity in older adults is ubiquitous in many developed countries and is related to various negative health outcomes, making it an important public health target for intervention. However, treatment approaches for obesity in older adults remain controversial due to concerns surrounding the difficulty of behavior change with advancing age, exacerbating the age-related loss of skeletal muscle and bone, and the feasibility of long-term weight maintenance and related health consequences. This review serves to systematically examine the evidence regarding weight loss interventions with a focus on obese (body mass index 30 kg/m2 and above) older adults (aged 65 years and older) and some proposed mechanisms associated with exercise and caloric restriction (lifestyle intervention). Our findings indicate that healthy weight loss in this age group can be achieved through lifestyle interventions of up to a one-year period. Most interventions reviewed reported a loss of lean body mass and bone mineral density with weight loss. Paradoxically muscle quality and physical function improved. Inflammatory molecules and metabolic markers also improved, although the independent and additive effects of exercise and weight loss on these pathways are poorly understood. Using our review inclusion criteria, only one small pilot study investigating long-term weight maintenance and associated health implications was found in the literature. Future research on lifestyle interventions for obese older adults should address the loss of bone and lean body mass, inflammatory mechanisms, and include sufficient follow up to assess long-term weight maintenance and health outcomes.

When we grow older, especially if ill and not really physically active, we tend to lose our muscle mass. It gets replaced with fat. Our BMI may not change, but in reality, our fat-stores increase and so does the chance of being affected by obesity and its related diseases. BMI can also be inaccurate in the elderly for another common reason. As we grow old, we often get shorter. This is due to osteoporosis and spinal vertebral issues that take away inches in older age. If you remember that the BMI is a measure calculated from height and weight, you will understand that a change in height will change BMI as well. In fact, if one weighs the same, and their height is less, then the BMI will be falsely higher and one might be classified as “overweight” while in reality, he/she is not. Scientists and physicians still debate about a better measure for weight classification, but for now, BMI is the accepted one and physicians need to use it while understanding its limitations.
Physical inactivity, in turn, has rapid profound effects on skeletal muscle metabolism. Unlike the common association of obesity with increased lean body mass and muscle volume in young adults, obese older individuals often develop sarcopenia, reflected by reduction in lean body mass. Impaired mobility in older obese individuals is therefore hardly surprising. A recent study of 2,982 subjects, aged 70–79 years, followed up for 6.5 years, revealed that high adiposity increased the risk of new-onset mobility limitation by 40–50% (33). A cross-sectional study of 92 monozygotic and 104 dizygotic community-living pairs of twin sisters (aged 63–76 years) reared together found an inverse association between adiposity and mobility that was mostly due to the effect of shared genes (34). Larger waist circumference was a powerful predictor of new-onset disability 2 years later, associated with a 2.17-fold increase in the adjusted risk of mobility disability and a 4.77-fold higher adjusted risk of agility disability for men in the highest quintile compared with those in the lowest quintile (35).
Success in yoga to the obese and seniors hinges on the teacher’s ability to create an atmosphere of acceptance and success. Many yoga poses will need to be adapted for these populations. For example, forward bends may be taught holding on to a sturdy chair for support or even while seated in the chair for students with poor balance, and students should be encouraged to practice the postures at half capacity to avoid strain or injury. Teachers should reinforce the attitude that even a little practice of yoga can have beneficial effects. Yoga sequences may need to be shorter than usual and include frequent rests.
Another useful method is to take a waist measurement because fat in the centre of the body (apple-shaped obesity) is much more strongly linked to health risks than fat more widely distributed on the arms and legs. The first class (category) of medication used for weight control cause symptoms that mimic the sympathetic nervous system. They cause the body to feel “under stress” or “nervous.” As a result, the major side effect of this class of medication is high blood pressure. In her professional life, Sacramento public relations executive Kassy Perry has long represented health organizations trying to combat California’s obesity problem. In her personal life, she has struggled with weight loss, trying with little success to drop the 30 pounds she gained after age 50. Today, at 52, she’s active and athletic. But the weight won’t melt away.
One problem with using weight-for-height tables is that doctors disagree over which is the best table to use. Several versions are available. Many have different weight ranges, and some tables account for a person’s frame size, age and sex, while other tables do not.
Unintentional or involuntary weight loss is a common phenomenon among older adults, with an annual incidence of approximately 13%.1 Problematic weight loss in the older adult is defined by the United States Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 (Title IV: subtitle C: Nursing Home Reform) as a loss of 5% of body weight in one month or 10% over a period of six months or longer.2,3 In this review, we focus on unintentional weight loss for which no organic cause can be found, although frequently, the loss of weight may be associated with chronic conditions.3 Older patients who involuntarily lose substantial amounts of weight without an obvious cause can pose difficult diagnostic and management dilemmas for physicians.

People who are now between 65 and 80 years old have seen their overall health improve compared to three years ago. And people who are aging into the senior community are far less likely to smoke than earlier generations.
Their results showed that people born between 1966 and 1985 became obese at a much faster rate than people born in previous generations. Researchers found that 20% of people born in 1966-1985 were obese by 20-29 years of age. Obesity clearly exacerbates the age-related decline in physical function and causes frailty in older individuals. Frailty in older obese individuals may be related to the insulin resistance and inflammation that often accompany obesity (36). This is reflected by self-reported impairment in activities of daily living in the older obese individual, limitations in mobility and decreased physical performance (as detailed in the former segment), increased risk for functional decline, and a higher rate of nursing home admissions (35,37–39). Of particular significance in establishing a cause-and-effect relationship between obesity and frailty is the recent report that weight loss and exercise can ameliorate frailty in older obese adults (40).

The other procedure is gastric banding, where an inflatable pouch causes gastric constriction. Changing the volume in the ring that encircles the stomach can change the amount of constriction. Fortunately, researchers are beginning to understand the differences between the wrong mix and a healthy one, as well as the specific factors that shape those differences. Bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA): There are two methods of the BIA. One involves standing on a special scale with footpads. A harmless amount of electrical current is sent through the body, and then percentage of body fat is calculated. You may sometime hear about grandpa that smoked all his life and is still doing just fine. It doesn’t mean that smoking does not affect people’s health. While everybody else has died from cancer or other lung diseases at a younger age, grandpa is now older and doing well while still smoking like a chimney, as he may just happen to have a sort of resistance to the harmful effects of smoking. This may explain the “obesity paradox” and why some older adults affected by obesity seem to do better than their normal weight counterparts. This said, there is no final word on whether overweight and obesity are protective in the older population and more studies are needed. Nevertheless, reluctance is sometimes seen in implementing weight-loss regimens in the elderly, and it may be due at least in part to these uncertainties.

It’s not your imagination — as the years have passed, your body has become softer and less muscular. From age 25 to age 75, body fat typically doubles, according to University of Rochester Medical Center, and your lean muscle mass decreases. This decrease in muscle mass means your body needs fewer calories to maintain your weight, but if you keep eating like you did as a younger adult, your weight will go up. If you plan to skip the gym and focus solely on controlling your food intake for your weight-loss efforts, think again. Certain medications may cause you to gain weight. These include some corticosteroids, antidepressants, and seizure medications. Medication can slow the rate at which your body burns calories, increase your appetite, or cause your body to hold extra water. Obesity in older adults is prevalent in many parts of the world and associated with a sequel of poor health outcomes. Currently, the per capita spending on obesity-attributable conditions are greater for Medicare recipients than for younger age groups (Finkelstein 2009). No doubt, the growing number of obese older adults in the population will present public health challenges unless actions are taken to reverse this trend.
Of special interest to women who have gained weight after having a baby is the fact that breastfeeding helps you shed some extra pounds. Besides the positive effects for the baby, breastfeeding burns approximately 500 extra calories each day.
The results of all the scrutiny of processed food are hardly scary, although some groups and writers try to make them appear that way. The Pew Charitable Trusts’ Food Additives Project, for example, has bemoaned the fact that the FDA directly reviews only about 70 percent of the ingredients found in food, permitting the rest to pass as “generally recognized as safe” by panels of experts convened by manufacturers. But the only actual risk the project calls out on its Web site or in its publications is a quote from a Times article noting that bromine, which has been in U.S. foods for eight decades, is regarded as suspicious by many because flame retardants containing bromine have been linked to health risks. There is no conclusive evidence that bromine itself is a threat.

There are also wide economic gaps between older adults in different racial/ethnic groups. While just 8 percent of non-Hispanic whites ages 65 and older lived in poverty in 2014, the comparable figure for Latinos was 18 percent, and for African Americans, it was 19 percent.
The first step in addressing skin problems is to conduct a skin assessment of obese patients. The specificity and degree of skin problems will determine the intervention. Nurses are advised to initiate measures to decrease friction as soon as possible after hospital admission. Additionally, in older women, urinary incontinence from a large, heavy abdomen causing the valve on the bladder to weaken may result in the leaking of urine when coughing or sneezing. Nurses should educate patients about keeping the area dry so as to prevent skin problems. Strategies to keep the area dry include wearing absorption pads in their underwear and changing underwear as soon as possible when leakage occurs.
But when it comes to disease fears, the baby boomers are misguided. Nearly half of them worry most about cancer, the second leading killer in the U.S.. Heart disease is the nation’s No. 1 killer, but it’s third in line on the boomers’ worry list. They’re more concerned about memory loss.

Treatment focuses on underlying etiology. Older adults are more likely than younger adults to experience functional limitations associated with chronic illnesses that may begin a stress-pain-depression cycle that can result in lifestyle patterns leading obesity (Lorig et al., 2006).

Most of the evidence about obesity in cancer survivors comes from people who were diagnosed with breast, prostate, or colorectal cancer. Research indicates that obesity may worsen several aspects of cancer survivorship, including quality of life, cancer recurrence, cancer progression, and prognosis (survival) (37, 38).

The next class (category) of drugs changes the metabolism of fat. Orlistat (Xenical, alli) is the only drug of this category that is U.S. FDA approved. This is a class of anti-obesity drugs called lipase inhibitors, or fat blockers. Fat from food can only be absorbed into the body after being broken up (a process called digestion) by digestive enzymes called lipases in the intestines. By inhibiting the action of lipase enzymes, orlistat prevents the intestinal absorption of fat by 30%. Drugs in this class do not affect brain chemistry. Theoretically, orlistat also should have minimal or no systemic side effects (side effects in other parts of the body) because the major locale of action is inside the gut lumen and very little of the drug is absorbed.
A Dutch study recently released in the Annals of Internal Medicine reported that people who are overweight at age 40 will shave three years off life expectancy on average. Being obese at age 40 shortens life expectancy by six to seven years.
A slew of start-ups are trying to find ways of producing fresh, local, unprocessed meals quickly and at lower cost. But could this food eventually be sold as cheaply, conveniently, and ubiquitously as today’s junky fast food? Even if wholesome food caught on with the public at large, including the obese population, and even if poor and working-class people were willing to pay a premium for it, how long would it take to scale up from a handful of shops to the tens of thousands required to begin making a dent in the obesity crisis? How long would it take to create the thousands of local farms we’d need in order to provide these shops with fresh, unprocessed ingredients, even in cities?

Any good diet plan will include exercise. It helps to increase metabolism and is one less opportunity to eat during the day. You should exercise for at least 30 minutes, five times a week. Regular exercise also helps your heart and lungs and lowers triglyceride levels that can cause heart disease. It also increases the HDL (“good cholesterol”) levels. Even simple measures such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator and short walks eventually add up to a lot of calories burned.
