Sleep apnea is a serious health risk associated with obesity. A person who has sleep apnea often snores heavily and stops breathing or takes very shallow breaths for short periods during sleep. Obesity increases the risk for sleep apnea, and excess fat stored around the neck can narrow the airway and make breathing difficult. Sleep apnea may cause daytime sleepiness and eventually lead to heart failure. Weight loss usually improves sleep apnea.
In one blinded randomized control trial (five publications), megestrol acetate was used in the treatment of unexplained weight loss.23–27 Sixty-nine patients were randomly assigned to receive placebo or megestrol 800 mg/d for 12 weeks. At 12 weeks, there were no significant differences in weight gain between treatment groups, although patients treated with megestrol reported significantly greater improvements in appetite, enjoyment of life and well-being. There was no difference in survival between the groups at four years.

Much of the food isn’t all that different from what I can get in any other supermarket, but sprinkled throughout are items that scream “wholesome.” One that catches my eye today, sitting prominently on an impulse-buy rack near the checkout counter, is Vegan Cheesy Salad Booster, from Living Intentions, whose package emphasizes the fact that the food is enhanced with spirulina, chlorella, and sea vegetables. The label also proudly lets me know that the contents are raw—no processing!—and that they don’t contain any genetically modified ingredients. What the stuff does contain, though, is more than three times the fat content per ounce as the beef patty in a Big Mac (more than two-thirds of the calories come from fat), and four times the sodium.
Aerobic exercises included treadmill walking, stationary cyclingand stair climbing. Resistance training involved upper-body and lower-body exerciseson weight-lifting machines. All groups also did flexibility and balance exercises.
An enormous amount of media space has been dedicated to promoting the notion that all processed food, and only processed food, is making us sickly and overweight. In this narrative, the food-industrial complex—particularly the fast-food industry—has turned all the powers of food-processing science loose on engineering its offerings to addict us to fat, sugar, and salt, causing or at least heavily contributing to the obesity crisis. The wares of these pimps and pushers, we are told, are to be universally shunned.
To be sure, weight loss for seniors can present complications. Losing muscle mass can reduce strength and hurt balance. The Washington University researchers found that lean body mass and bone mass slightly declined when seniors dropped weight, according to Science Daily. The researchers found dieting seniors lost 5% of lean body mass and, at the critical hip area, 3% bone mass density, the report noted. (5)
NCI supports research on obesity and cancer risk through a variety of activities, including large cooperative initiatives, web and data resources, extramural and intramural epidemiologic studies, basic science, and dissemination and implementation resources. For example, the Transdisciplinary Research on Energetics and Cancer (TREC) initiative links four research centers and a coordination center to investigate how the combined effects of obesity, poor diet, and low levels of physical activity increase cancer risk.
In addition to its health impacts, obesity leads to many problems including disadvantages in employment[200][201] and increased business costs. These effects are felt by all levels of society from individuals, to corporations, to governments.
Kidney cancer: People who are overweight or obese are nearly twice as likely as normal-weight people to develop renal cell cancer, the most common form of kidney cancer (13). The association of renal cell cancer with obesity is independent of its association with high blood pressure, a known risk factor for kidney cancer (14).
Four trials (10 publications) examined pharmacologic treatment options for unexplained weight loss (Table 2).14–16,21–27 All four trials were small and only one was a blinded randomized control trial.23–27 The most commonly studied medication was megestrol acetate. One study also looked at the use of dronabinol for unexplained weight loss.
Your caloric needs decrease as you age; therefore, for example, a woman over age 50 should cut back to between 1,600 and 2,000 calories a day, depending on her level of physical activity, according to the National Institute on Aging. If a lack of mobility is a hindrance to preparing healthy foods at home, don’t resort to calling for takeout. Instead, look into a grocery delivery service that allows you to place an order on the Internet and have it delivered to your doorstep. Eating enough food to keep up with the calories needed for movement is important, too — according to WebMD, seniors often grapple with preparing fresh, healthy foods at home due to difficulty chewing due to tooth pain or dentures, problems with indigestion and a declining sense of taste. Emotional problems such as depression or loneliness can play a role in both eating too little and eating too many of the wrong comfort foods. Visit a medical professional to determine a healthy diet for your physical and mental needs.

Mind-body therapies — such as acupuncture, mindfulness meditation and yoga — may complement other obesity treatments. Unintentional weight loss appears to be associated with an increased risk of death among both older adults living in care facilties and community-dwelling older adults. In general, the impact on life expectancy of treating the weight loss remains unclear.

Obesity in pets is common in many countries. In the United States, 23–41% of dogs are overweight, and about 5.1% are obese.[231] The rate of obesity in cats was slightly higher at 6.4%.[231] In Australia the rate of obesity among dogs in a veterinary setting has been found to be 7.6%.[232] The risk of obesity in dogs is related to whether or not their owners are obese; however, there is no similar correlation between cats and their owners.[233]
• Functional. Decreased daily living skills and poverty negatively impact shopping and cooking. Poorly fitting, or lack of, dentures makes eating difficult. Caregiver neglect is another factor; the quality of the relationship between the person being fed and the feeder is a predictor of food intake.4 Loneliness and social isolation also are linked to decreased food intake.
Stick to water. Skip high-calorie beverages, such as soda, fruit smoothies, and fancy coffee drinks. There are approximately nine packages of sugar and close to 150 calories in 12-oz can of soda or juice. Smoothies and coffee drinks are often 250 -500 calories, excluding the whipped cream. Instead, choose low- or no-calorie drinks, such as green tea or fruit-infused water.
Fruits are a delicious source of natural sugars, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber. Keeping fruit on hand as a go to snack and dessert is a healthy and low calorie way to satisfy a sweet tooth. Be sure to ask your doctor about which fruits may interact with any medication.

Gallbladder cancer: Compared with normal-weight people, people who are overweight have a slight (about 20%) increase in risk of gallbladder cancer, and people who are obese have a 60% increase in risk of gallbladder cancer (19, 20). The risk increase is greater in women than men.

A significant limitation of all weight-for-height tables is that they do not distinguish between excess fat and muscle. A very muscular person may be classified as obese, according to the tables, when he or she in fact is not.
If current trends continue, Australia’s Generation X will overtake Baby Boomers for poor health, including rates of obesity and diabetes, which could have huge implications for healthcare and the workforce. Researchers compared the health status of Baby Boomers (born from 1946-1965) and Generation X (1966-1980) at the same age range of 25-44 years and found that Generation X had significantly poorer levels of self-rated health, and higher levels of obesity and diabetes compared with Boomers, with no real difference in physical activity between the two groups.

Certain medications may cause weight gain or changes in body composition; these include insulin, sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, atypical antipsychotics, antidepressants, steroids, certain anticonvulsants (phenytoin and valproate), pizotifen, and some forms of hormonal contraception.[2]
Overweight and obesity, as well as their related noncommunicable diseases, are largely preventable. Supportive environments and communities are fundamental in shaping people’s choices, by making the choice of healthier foods and regular physical activity the easiest choice (the choice that is the most accessible, available and affordable), and therefore preventing overweight and obesity.
According to a study published by the National Institute of Health (NIH) options for oral nutrition support should be considered for any patient taking inadequate food and fluid to meet their requirements. The study lists options, such as nutritionally complete pre-packaged drinks. The Ensure drink is one example.
CDC recommends that health professionals use BMI percentile when measuring the bodies of children and young people aged 2 to 20 years. BMI percentile takes into account that young people are still growing and are growing at different rates depending on their age and sex. Health professionals use growth charts to determine whether a young person’s weight falls into a healthy range for his or her height, age, and sex.
In both children and adults, there is an association between television viewing time and the risk of obesity.[113][114][115] A review found 63 of 73 studies (86%) showed an increased rate of childhood obesity with increased media exposure, with rates increasing proportionally to time spent watching television.[116]

Cancer – In women, being overweight contributes to an increased risk for a variety of cancers including breast cancer, colon, gallbladder, and uterus. Men who are overweight have a higher risk of colon cancer and prostate cancers.

A chart review of 290 medical records from many centres in the United States that included long-term care residents and home care clients found six factors to be associated with unexplained weight loss.3 These factors included reduced functional ability, taking in 50% or less of the food served in three consecutive days, refusal of 50% or more of food replacement offered over a seven-day period, chewing problems, a serum albumin level less than 35 g/L with normal hydration status and a cholesterol level less than 4.1 mmol/L.

Constipation: A common complaint, constipation can be a result of a diet that is lacking adequate nutrients and fluids. Though there are several over-the-counter remedies for constipation, Fabius also recommends combating poor nutrition with a daily multivitamin and possibly a dietary beverage supplement such as Ensure.
The number of obese Americans ages 65 and older will increase from 10.3 million to 14.3 million by 2010, averaging 400,000 new obese adults per year (Arteburn, Crane, & Sullivan, 2004). Today, more than 65% of adults in the United States are overweight or obese. Obesity puts people at risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and some types of cancer.
A rigorous inclusion criterion as described above was employed. Only randomized controlled trials with a minimum weight loss intervention of three months, and body composition measured by DXA, MRI, CT, or hydrostatic weighing were included. Studies which targeted specific chronic diseases or conditions (e.g. diabetes mellitus, osteoarthritis), were excluded.

Overweight and obesity and their associated health problems have a significant economic impact on health systems and the medical costs associated with overweight and obesity have both direct and indirect costs – direct medical costs may include preventive, diagnostic, and treatment services related to obesity, while indirect costs relate to loss of income from decreased productivity, restricted activity, absenteeism, and bed days and the income lost by premature death.
The correlation between class and BMI varies globally. A review in 1989 found that in developed countries women of a high social class were less likely to be obese. No significant differences were seen among men of different social classes. In the developing world, women, men, and children from high social classes had greater rates of obesity.[133] An update of this review carried out in 2007 found the same relationships, but they were weaker. The decrease in strength of correlation was felt to be due to the effects of globalization.[134] Among developed countries, levels of adult obesity, and percentage of teenage children who are overweight, are correlated with income inequality. A similar relationship is seen among US states: more adults, even in higher social classes, are obese in more unequal states.[135]

While weight management may be complex, its solution is basic: Keep it simple. As director of preventive cardiology at the University of Chicago Medical Center Michael Davidson told US News and World Report, the best eating and exercise plans prioritize the question, “What can be a lifelong change instead of just a short-term fix for the patient?” Whether you’ve tried and failed in the past or are setting out on your first weight loss journey, letting this question be your guide may make all the difference in 2017.
It’s hard to change habits. You have to be ready. Make sure this is the right time for you. Are you ready to make a plan and stay on it? Do you have the support of your family and friends? Do you know what your first steps will be? Becoming healthier and staying that way is a lifelong effort.

The impact of obesity on male fertility is less clear. In a study by Hammoud and colleagues, the incidence of low sperm count (oligospermia) and poor sperm motility (asthenospermia) increased with BMI, from 5.3 and 4.5 percent, respectively, in normal-weight men to 15.6 and 13.3 percent in obese men. (24) In contrast, a study by Chavarro and colleagues found little effect of body weight on semen quality except at the highest BMIs (above 35), despite major differences in reproductive hormone levels with increasing weight. After the pounds have melted off, you cannot go back to the old diet as the weight will come back again. Continue monitoring your dog’s weight on a bi-weekly basis. You may need to make some adjustments after the ideal weight has been reached. Consult with your vet for the maintenance diet for your senior pet, and be sure to weigh the food you give per day to make tweaking amounts easier in case of future weight gain.
Making healthier choices. To make your overall diet healthier, eat more plant-based foods, such as fruits, vegetables and whole-grain carbohydrates. Also emphasize lean sources of protein — such as beans, lentils and soy — and lean meats. If you like fish, try to include fish twice a week. Limit salt and added sugar. Stick with low-fat dairy products. Eat small amounts of fats, and make sure they come from heart-healthy sources, such as olive, canola and nut oils.

Many people think of yoga as a practice intended only for young, thin, supple bodies — such as those depicted in the illustrations for most books and articles about yoga. However, people of all fitness levels can enjoy the benefits of yoga. The trick is to adapt the traditional poses so those with physical challenges, such as the obese and many seniors, can perform them effectively. Before attempting yoga, consult your doctor. A physical therapist may also be to help adapt the poses for special needs.
Obesity in older adults is ubiquitous in many developed countries and is related to various negative health outcomes, making it an important public health target for intervention. However, treatment approaches for obesity in older adults remain controversial due to concerns surrounding the difficulty of behavior change with advancing age, exacerbating the age-related loss of skeletal muscle and bone, and the feasibility of long-term weight maintenance and related health consequences. This review serves to systematically examine the evidence regarding weight loss interventions with a focus on obese (body mass index 30 kg/m2 and above) older adults (aged 65 years and older) and some proposed mechanisms associated with exercise and caloric restriction (lifestyle intervention). Our findings indicate that healthy weight loss in this age group can be achieved through lifestyle interventions of up to a one-year period. Most interventions reviewed reported a loss of lean body mass and bone mineral density with weight loss. Paradoxically muscle quality and physical function improved. Inflammatory molecules and metabolic markers also improved, although the independent and additive effects of exercise and weight loss on these pathways are poorly understood. Using our review inclusion criteria, only one small pilot study investigating long-term weight maintenance and associated health implications was found in the literature. Future research on lifestyle interventions for obese older adults should address the loss of bone and lean body mass, inflammatory mechanisms, and include sufficient follow up to assess long-term weight maintenance and health outcomes.
Depression may be one of the most common effects of obesity. Many obese people suffer emotional distress. Because of the emphasis on physical appearance in our culture, which equates slimness with beauty, obese people may feel unattractive. They also are subjected to prejudice, ridicule, and discrimination, which may make them feel ashamed or rejected.
Sleep-wake cycles can contribute to obesity. NHLBI continues funding studies to understand how the body’s internal sleep-wake cycles influence sleep and eating behaviors in people who are obese. This may help discover new therapies.

The Associated Press (AP) Life Goes Strong Poll found that today’s boomers are more obese than other generations: Roughly a third of those polled reported weights that qualified as obese (compared to a quarter of older and younger responders), with an additional 36% being overweight.
Disability levels among older Americans declined steadily during the 1980s and 1990s. This decline was hailed as one of the most significant advances in the health and well-being of Americans in the last quarter of the 20th century. Contributing to the decline were both a drop in the incidence of disability and a rise in the chance of recovery from a disabling condition.

Specific industries, such as the airline, healthcare and food industries, have special concerns. Due to rising rates of obesity, airlines face higher fuel costs and pressures to increase seating width.[213] In 2000, the extra weight of obese passengers cost airlines US$275 million.[214] The healthcare industry has had to invest in special facilities for handling severely obese patients, including special lifting equipment and bariatric ambulances.[215] Costs for restaurants are increased by litigation accusing them of causing obesity.[216] In 2005 the US Congress discussed legislation to prevent civil lawsuits against the food industry in relation to obesity; however, it did not become law.[216]
Hormones. Women tend to gain weight especially during certain events such as pregnancy, menopause, and in some cases, with the use of oral contraceptives. However, with the availability of the lower-dose estrogen pills, weight gain has not been as great a risk.
For obese or overweight people who have two or more risk factors, federal guidelines recommend weight loss. Even a small amount of weight loss (such as ten percent of your current weight) lowers your chance of developing diseases associated with obesity. Patients who are overweight but have less than two risk factors and do not have a high waist measurement may just need to prevent further weight gain rather than lose weight.

The points in this article clearly show that in the elderly population, weight classification may not always be accurate, which is one of the difficulties encountered in older adults. This is the first hurdle encountered when trying to evaluate and treat this disease in the elderly.
One small case–control study (three publications) compared 14 patients who had anorexia with 10 control patients.14–16 The patients with anorexia had a median age of 78 (standard deviation [SD] 8) years and BMI of 18.4 (SD 0.6) kg/m2 in the absence of any organic or mental disorders. Data from the control group were collected retrospectively by reviewing 24 hospital records of persons over 65 years of age in whom a lumbar puncture had been performed to rule out a meningeal syndrome. The 10 patients in the control group were selected because they were nonsmokers and had a normal body weight (i.e., within 10% of their ideal body weight). The study primarily focused on examining the changes in anthropometric parameters, amino acids, neuropeptides and cytokine levels associated with anorexia. Of the 14 anorectic patients, five received treatment with megestrol acetate (480 mg/day) for six months. There were no changes in anthropometric parameters with treatment. The only significant changes in laboratory parameters were an increase in plasma transferrin level (p < 0.05) and an increase in CSF β-endorphin levels (p < 0.05). After my excursion to Whole Foods, I drive a few minutes to a Trader Joe’s, also known for an emphasis on wholesome foods. Here at the register I’m confronted with a large display of a snack food called “Inner Peas,” consisting of peas that are breaded in cornmeal and rice flour, fried in sunflower oil, and then sprinkled with salt. By weight, the snack has six times as much fat as it does protein, along with loads of carbohydrates. I can’t recall ever seeing anything at any fast-food restaurant that represents as big an obesogenic crime against the vegetable kingdom. (A spokesperson for Trader Joe’s said the company does not consider itself a “ ‘wholesome food’ grocery retailer.” Living Intentions did not respond to a request for comment.)
The prevalence of obesity is increasing in all age groups. According to a 2001 census and the projection made by the United Nations (1996 revision), the elderly constitute 7.5% of the Indian population, and by all indications 21% of the Indian population will be 60 years and above by 2050. Medical science discoveries, improved lifestyle, and social conditions during the past few decades have increased the life span of man. Life expectancy at birth in developed countries is over 70 years. Questions have risen about the relation between obesity in old age and total or disease-specific mortality, the definition of obesity in the elderly, its clinical relevance, and about the need for its treatment. Information about changes in body composition and fat distribution among the elderly will help us better understand the relationships between obesity and morbidity in the elderly.
Weight-loss trials with adults 65 years and older that include mechanisms are few. These studies demonstrate that volume of exercise (particularly resistance training) appears critical in attenuating the loss of bone and muscle, along with calcium and Vitamin D supplementation. Inflammatory molecules and pathways, bone active hormones, exercise, mechanical unloading, sclerostin, and diet composition (glycemic index) all appear to be mediators in the response to weight loss.
